Miramichi, NB – February 15, 2024 – The Brilliant Labs Innovation Fair (IF) returns on April 4th at the Miramichi Eco Centre. Kicking off the week’s celebration leading to the total eclipse April 8th. This event is the largest youth STEAM project showcase in Atlantic Canada that addresses global issues, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Jeff Willson, Executive Director of Brilliant Labs, says, “This year, as we mark a decade of Brilliant Labs, we’re focusing on ‘What IF’ questions to drive innovation. We encourage all Atlantic Canadian communities to support our young problem-solvers and consider your own ‘What IF’ dreams for innovation.”

IF Project Showcase Samples:

Mixing education and astronomy, students from Blackville School are set to launch a high-altitude balloon project during the upcoming solar eclipse. They aim to capture footage using equipment from their makerspace and to collect data utilizing Brilliant Labs’ b.Board technology. In a collaborative effort to elevate this project, students are joining forces with Harrison Trimble High School and Moncton High School. This alliance is pooling talent, resources, and creativity to achieve what promises to be a memorable collaborative science project.

Mission Mars: Student engineering teams from Hanwell School Academy in Fredericton, NB, are set to compete with scientists from West Kent Elementary and L.M. Montgomery School, both from Charlottetown, PEI. The teams will showcase and build the ultimate Martian rover. This rover is more than a machine; it’s a bold explorer heading into the uncharted territory of the Miramichi landscape.

Sustainable Fashion: Discover sustainable design as it merges creativity and innovation with environmental care and responsible resource use. At the upcoming IF event, students from École Camille Vautour, St-Antoine NB, will reveal their stunning fashion pieces that embody creativity and inclusivity. Plus, students from Janeville Elementary School have worked to upcycle pet fashions, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. École Leandre Legresley’s, Grand-Anse NB, students are making strides in toy production with eco-friendly biomaking bouncy balls. Amherst Regional High’s students will also be impressed with their transformative use of kombucha leather in avant-garde fashion. This fusion of creativity, sustainability, and innovation… bio is the new tech!

Ocean Conservation: Centre d’Apprentissage du Haut-Madawaska School(CAHM) students are offering a deep dive into the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals with their engaging aquarium project. This initiative brings the consequences of ocean pollution to light and its impact on marine life. As the students introduce pollution symbols into the aquarium, the changing sounds of whales powerfully illustrate the effects on our oceans’ ecosystems. This immersive project aims to raise awareness and drive discussions on ocean health.

Heather Casey Campbell, French Immersion Teacher at Superior Middle School, commented “My students enjoy investigating and planning hands-on activities that encourage creativity and originality. The Innovation Fair allows them to show what they’ve created and to celebrate the achievements of others. “

The Mayor of Miramichi, Adam Lordon, added, “The Innovation Fair highlights the incredible talent of youth and Miramichi’s commitment to innovation.”

Other notable projects include the Fun Domino Wall by CAHM’s Grade 6 students and Caledonia Regional High School will present a project on Wabanaki culture and history.

Brilliant Labs invites the public to support this event, which not only showcases student innovation but also promotes a sustainable future.

The event takes place on April 4th, from 12 PM to 3:30 PM, at the Miramichi Eco Centre. Admission is free, and donations to support STEAM initiatives are welcome.
