Leadership, Learning, and Innovation Take Flight at the Provincial Student Leadership Conference
Approximately 160 students and teachers from all over Newfoundland and Labrador gathered at St. Paul’s Intermediate in Gander, NL, for the Provincial Student Leadership Conference. This year marked the 30th anniversary of the conference, and it was the first held post-COVID.
The weekend was filled with guest presenters and organized learning sessions for both teachers and students, and Brilliant Labs was honored to be a session leader. Bobbie Keeping-Sibley led several engaging sessions for participants.
The theme of the event was “Ready for Takeoff.” For the students, one session, “Steering with Servos,” involved coding micro:bits and connecting servo motors to b.Boards. Students programmed their devices so that when tilted left, the left motor would activate, and when tilted right, the right motor would activate. This creative activity was provided by fellow Brilliant Labs teammate Brett MacDonald.
Another activity, “Lights On/Off Landing Strip,” allowed students to code micro:bits and connect them to neopixels. They programmed the lights to turn on when it was dark and off when it was light, simulating a landing strip.
Teachers also participated in a “Taste of Technology” session, where they explored micro:bits, b.Boards, and coding project ideas. The session demonstrated how easily curriculum outcomes can be achieved using these technologies.
